As Resident Experience Coordinator for The Wellington Senior Living, I’ve seen how a strong sense of community transforms senior living from a place to stay into a place to truly thrive. Building connections among residents, team members, and the surrounding neighborhood isn’t just a nice-to-have — it is essential for well-being, joy, and purpose.

Creating community starts with understanding what makes each resident feel valued and included. It means designing experiences that spark conversation, laughter, and shared memories. Whether it’s a small group event, a holiday celebration, an Act of Service, or a themed gathering, these moments strengthen relationships and help residents feel like they belong.
From my perspective, every interaction is a chance to weave the fabric of community. When residents feel connected, they enjoy their days more fully and experience the emotional and social benefits that come with genuine human connection.
To me, community in a senior living setting means togetherness. It brings people together to share stories, enjoy laughter, and appreciate each other’s company.
Building connections among residents is essential because many seniors have experienced major changes in their lives. Forming new friendships helps them feel grounded, supported, and part of something meaningful.
I encourage residents to engage with one another through food, as it naturally brings people together. Whether dining in the restaurant or gathering at an event, shared meals spark conversation and build comfort.
I connect our community with the surrounding town by partnering with local small businesses. These partnerships welcome families into our home and help residents maintain ties to familiar places and people.
One of my favorite activities is taking residents on outings to local businesses. Visiting an ice cream shop, café, or coffeehouse supports the community and gives residents a fun chance to explore something new.

To help new residents feel welcome, I introduce them to current residents and invite them to share meals in the restaurant. This simple step helps them settle in quickly and begin forming connections. Resident Orientation and regular check-ins during their first few months also ensure they feel supported and at home.

At the heart of our community, connections are everything. Every conversation, shared laugh, and meaningful moment enriches the lives of our residents. As Resident Experience Coordinator for The Wellington Senior Living, I’ve seen how intentional efforts to build relationships can transform daily life — turning our building into a true home filled with treasured moments.
By prioritizing relationships, engagement, and belonging, we’re not just planning events — we’re building a warm, supportive community where everyone can thrive. Ultimately, the connections we nurture make all the difference.
