Nostalgic Lunchbox Treats

Category: Culinary

Author: Cruz Meza, Culinary Director

Do you remember the days when the lunch bell rang, signaling the excitement of discovering the treasures hidden in your lunch box? Join me as I take a trip down memory lane, revisiting some items—some I’d rather forget—and the iconic snacks and treats that fueled my childhood adventures and satisfied my youthful cravings.

Growing up, my family relied on school-provided lunches due to their financial situation. The strangest thing I ever saw on the school menu was a Chalupa. I didn’t know what it was at first, but I tried it and ended up loving it! The school lunches provided me with balanced meals.

Healthy packed lunch with a turkey sandwich on whole grain bread, served with a banana, apple, baby carrots, and cookies, ready to enjoy.

If I could design the ultimate school lunch menu, it would feature pizza and a classic favorite, sloppy joes.

I don’t have much experience packing lunches yet, but I’m excited about the prospect of preparing lunches for my one-year-old when he’s ready for school. Packing school lunches and meal prepping are quite similar—they both require planning, prepping, cooking, and thoughtfully pairing food items.

To ensure a well-balanced and nutritious meal, I follow the food pyramid, which includes dairy, vegetables, fruits, protein, and starch. How a lunch is packaged also plays a role in maintaining its quality and taste.

I’d love to see good old-fashioned biscuits and gravy in a breakfast box.

Even though we’ve traded our lunch boxes for grown-up alternatives and our tastes have evolved, the nostalgia of those beloved treats still reminds us of the innocence and delight of youth. I hope you can find some classic favorites and discover new tempting treats every time you visit The Wellington Senior Living Bistro or Country Kitchen and that you never stop making culinary memories.
