A Healthier Balance, A Deeper Purpose

As Culinary Director at The Wellington Senior Living, I approach each day with passion—not just purpose. I face new challenges, hear new stories, and always find fresh reasons to feel grateful. I’m excited to share how I arrived in this role, what drives my dedication, and what a typical day looks like in our community. My work goes beyond preparing meals—it centers on building connections, creating purpose, and making a real difference where it counts.

I chose to become a Culinary Director in senior living because I needed a better work-life balance. For years, I worked in restaurants and hotels, often pulling 16- to 18-hour shifts and going months without a single day off. Eventually, I realized it was time for a change.

Fortunately, my experience in four senior living communities across Arizona helped prepare me for this role. Two of those communities offered independent, resort-style living. The other two focused on assisted living and memory care. Arrow is the first place I’ve worked that offers all three levels of care under one roof. This setup gives me a complete view of residents’ needs at every stage of life.

A Day in the Kitchen

What I enjoy most about senior living is the relationships I build with residents. These connections bring joy and meaning to each day.

Each morning, I start by walking through the kitchen to greet my team. Then I check in with our breakfast cook to ensure she has everything she needs. If she’s running behind, I jump on the line to help get meals out on time. After breakfast is under control, I grab my knife and cutting board to prepare the soup of the day. From there, I begin prepping or cooking the lunch special.

Saying Yes to Purpose

For anyone considering a culinary career in senior living, my advice is simple: say yes. The job still requires hard work and dedication, but the work-life balance is far better than in hotels or restaurants. More importantly, it’s deeply rewarding.

To me, success means three things: no one got hurt, every team member finished their tasks, and each resident left the table feeling satisfied.

At the end of the day, I take the greatest pride in knowing I’ve contributed something meaningful—whether it was a favorite dish, a heartfelt conversation, or a comforting moment. Thank you for welcoming me into your community and allowing me to serve at your table. I’m truly honored.
