HERstory: Honoring the Journey of Individuals Living with Dementia

Category: Memory Care

Author: Camilla Strickland, Memory Care Director

Women’s History Month

HERstory serves as a tribute to the unique journey, experiences, and contributions of an individual living with dementia. Each HERstory carries a rich past of memories, relationships, and accomplishments that define their identity. As dementia progresses, memories begin to fade. Preserving and sharing these narratives become invaluable in honoring the person affected and maintaining their dignity. At The Wellington, we believe in acknowledging and celebrating each individual’s life story. Through this approach, we affirm the inherent worth and complexity of those living with dementia. It allows us to transcend the limitations imposed by their condition.

Through storytelling, we bridge the gap between the past and the present. This fosters meaningful interactions and cultivates a sense of belonging for individuals living with dementia. By embracing their narratives with empathy and compassion, we counteract stigma, dispel misconceptions, and promote a culture of inclusivity and respect for individuals affected by dementia.

Below is a HERstory about one of the residents living in our Memory Care Neighborhood.

Elaine M. has lived her life in the service of others. She was born a middle child on a farm in Ohio and learned at an early age to care for her family. It took hard work to sustain. Throughout her youth and school years, Elaine demonstrated her natural leadership abilities. She actively participated in various activities, including serving in 4-H and on the student council. Additionally, she showcased her spirit and enthusiasm as a cheerleader and was honored as the homecoming queen.

She earned a degree and began her career as a Medical Technician, finding joy in helping others. Elaine met her husband, Don, who served as a career Air Force Officer, and they shared 58 years of marriage together. This marked the beginning of Elaine’s journey of personal sacrifices for her family, a journey she embarked upon with dedication and love. She traveled overseas and through the States while raising three children. As a devout Catholic, Elaine dedicated endless hours to her work at Avila College in the Business Office. Her commitment stemmed from her desire to provide her children with a Catholic education, from elementary school through high school and into college.

Elaine is incredibly talented at crafting and has brought joy to so many with her beautiful handmade gifts. Her greatest love is being “Mimi” to her eight amazing grandchildren.

Sharing the life story of someone living with dementia is not just an act of preserving memories; it’s an embodiment of compassion, understanding, and respect. By embracing their past, we honor their journey and provide valuable insights into who they are beyond the constraints of their condition through HERstory.
