Welcoming With Heart: How Resident Ambassadors Transform the Move-In Experience

Category: Senior Living

Author: Rachel Schuckman, Resident Services Director

Moving into a senior living community is a major life transition. There is often excitement about new opportunities and friendships. There can also be uncertainty as residents adjust to a new home and routine.

One of the most valuable resources we have during that transition is our Resident Ambassador program. Resident Ambassadors help create connections and offer encouragement. They also provide peer-to-peer support that can make a new resident feel welcome from day one.

Their willingness to reach out matters. By sharing their experiences and inviting others into community life, they help turn neighbors into friends and a community into home.

As Resident Services Director at The Wellington, I have seen firsthand the difference these resident leaders make. They help new residents feel comfortable, connected, and engaged.

A Thoughtful Welcome From the Start

A successful move-in experience begins with helping each new resident feel noticed and supported. At The Wellington, the Resident Services Director greets the resident and provides a welcome basket. Helpful information is also shared to guide them through their first days.

From there, the team pays close attention to how the resident is feeling. Depending on their comfort level, a Resident Ambassador may check in on move-in day. They may also visit within the first few days. That timing matters because every resident adjusts differently. Some are ready to meet people right away. Others need time to settle in.

Resident Ambassadors help make those first connections feel natural. They may invite a new resident to share a meal or attend programming. A few days later, the Resident Services Director checks back in. During that visit, they review the welcome packet and answer questions. This mix of team support and resident connection creates a smoother move-in.

Helping New Residents Find Their Place

Resident Ambassadors prepare for new neighbors through a monthly Ambassador Committee meeting. During that time, the team shares upcoming move-ins. Ambassadors learn who may soon be joining the community. The Sales Director and Resident Services Director also keep ambassadors informed verbally. This helps them stay ready to offer a warm welcome.

Some of the most meaningful gestures are simple. Ambassadors invite new residents to meals and start conversations. They also take time to truly get to know them. These moments help new residents feel less like visitors. They begin to feel more like neighbors.

A senior woman smiles welcomingly at The Wellington Senior Living on a bright, sunny day.

One special example involved a new resident who had been an art professor for many years. Members of the Art Club learned about his background. Soon, they helped him connect with art-related programming. That personal invitation gave him a meaningful way to share his interests. It also helped him feel connected to community life.

Residents often respond quickly to other residents because peer connection feels natural. Team members care deeply. Still, a new resident may wonder if they are simply trying to help them get involved. When another resident reaches out, it can feel especially meaningful. That person also lives in the community and understands making a new place home.

Resident Ambassadors help shape the culture of The Wellington as community spokespeople. They may not have every answer. Still, they know how to help someone find one. Most importantly, they love living in the community. They want to share that feeling with new residents. Through kindness and encouragement, they help new residents feel more at home.

Resident Ambassadors do far more than welcome new residents. They help build the culture of our community. Through kindness, friendship, and a willingness to include others, they create an environment where people feel seen, valued, and connected.

The move-in process may only last a few days. The relationships formed during that time can have a lasting impact. We are grateful for the Resident Ambassadors who help make our community a place where every resident feels like they belong.
