Staff Spotlight: Why We Choose Senior Living Culinary

Category: Culinary

Author: Cruz Meza, Culinary Director

Every great meal starts with someone who cares.

Behind every breakfast served, every decorated brunch buffet, and every favorite recipe prepared is a team of dedicated culinary professionals who choose to make a difference every single day. While many cooks, servers, and dishwashers could work in traditional restaurants, they have chosen a different path—one where the people they serve become neighbors, friends, and even family.

In this Staff Spotlight, we’re highlighting the incredible individuals who make our dining programs special. Their stories remind us that senior living is about much more than preparing and serving meals—it’s about creating comfort, building relationships, celebrating life’s moments, and making every resident feel at home.

We asked members of our culinary teams to share why they chose senior living and what makes this work so meaningful. Here are their stories.

Discover why culinary team members at The Wellington Senior Living choose senior living, where dining creates purpose, connection, and lasting memories.

Creating Balance and Purpose

As Culinary Director at The Wellington Senior Living, I was first drawn to senior living because it offered a better work-life balance. In traditional restaurants, the hours can be long and demanding. It is not unusual to work 14- or 16-hour days, sometimes for months without a day off.

Senior living culinary offers a different rhythm. The hours of operation are more manageable, but the work still carries creativity, energy, and purpose. It allows culinary professionals to continue doing what they love while also building meaningful relationships with the people they serve.

Residents have taught me that life is too short to play it safe. You never know what your situation may be down the road. Their stories are a reminder to live fully, enjoy the little moments, and recognize that those little moments may become the big ones later.

One favorite tradition is Candlelight Dinner. These events give the culinary team a chance to break from the norm and elevate the meal. Tablecloths, decorated centerpieces, new recipes, and themed details help create a true dining experience. Residents also get to dress for the occasion and take part in something special.

Leading With Service in Mind

Success in senior living culinary takes strong leadership. A great culinary leader must guide both the back of the house and the front of the house. Everyone should be in tune with the same goal: serving residents well.

In senior living, the experience starts with service and ends with food. Every detail matters. A warm greeting, a well-prepared plate, and a thoughtful dining room atmosphere all work together. When the team is aligned, residents can feel that care.

There is not just one moment that shows this work makes a difference. After 12 years in senior living and five communities managed, there have been many. The most meaningful moments often come during goodbyes.

Each time I have left one community to work at another, residents have shared how much they would miss me and my food. Those moments stay with me. They show that senior living culinary is personal. The meals, conversations, and daily connections make a difference in residents’ lives every day.

Every member of our culinary team has a unique story, but they all share one thing in common—a passion for serving others.

Whether they’re preparing a resident’s favorite comfort food, celebrating a birthday, or simply greeting someone with a smile, their work goes far beyond the kitchen. They create moments of joy, foster meaningful relationships, and help make our communities feel like home.

To every cook, server, dishwasher, and culinary leader who chooses senior living over a traditional restaurant, thank you. Your compassion, dedication, and commitment to hospitality make a lasting impact on the lives of our residents every single day.

Together, we’re not just serving meals—we’re serving memories.
