Across the world, people are living longer than ever before. However, according to the World Health Organization, “evidence suggests the proportion of life in good health has remained broadly constant, implying that the additional years are in poor health.” Taking a proactive approach to aging can help us live full, energetic, and healthy lives no matter how many years we have lived.
As the Director of Wellness at The Wellington Senior Living, I advocate for proactive aging through simple yet impactful practices such as maintaining a nutritious diet, staying physically active, and attending annual check-ups.
To manage stress and anxiety effectively, consider incorporating several techniques into your daily routine. These can include meditation, deep breathing exercises, and listening to soothing music. The detrimental effects of stress and anxiety on health are significant. They include increased blood pressure, which can lead to risks such as stroke, heart attack, ulcers, and gastrointestinal issues. This underscores the importance of stress management. Furthermore, chronic stress can heighten the risk of developing dementia over time.
Numerous barriers, such as financial constraints, time limitations, and lack of motivation, may impede individuals from adhering to preventive care measures. The benefits of preventive care, including disease prevention and longevity, highlight its significance in maintaining overall health and well-being.
Encouraging proactive thinking can be achieved through various means. These include word-of-mouth recommendations and offering educational opportunities. We provide classes or workshops for both the public and our residents. By fostering awareness and understanding of preventive care’s importance, we empower individuals. This empowerment helps them take control of their health and well-being.
It is never too late to invest in your health. Taking control of our well-being can be the difference between surviving and thriving, the difference between extra years of truly living and extra years in decline. Make your years count. Approach aging proactively and use those extra years to get another degree, take up a new hobby, break a record, or explore opportunities you never thought you would get to experience.
